What’s your design style? Traditional, contemporary, or country? My design style could be described as a mix between country and cottage. Incorporating vintage items into my decorating is always necessary. It’s just a part of my style. However, normally, I’m not attracted to rusty items. That changed when I participated in Flea Fest. With over 300 vendors, there was an overload of everything I love to decorate with – architectural items, antiques, and everything in between. I was suddenly attracted to rusty containers – tool boxes, tackle boxes, and even old tools. It was really the colors that drew me to the containers. The blue, red, and green colors were so pretty.

My imagination started working and I wondered, “can these containers be repurposed?” Though I was unsure of the immediate use for them, I went ahead and bought a few. They were super cheap and no one else seemed to be interested in them. If you give it some time, you’ll always find a purpose for vintage items. Most vintage items are made well and will last another 100 years. They should be repurposed and made useful again.

The first sign of spring rolled around and I was itching for a project. I noticed my petunias were doing well and they were in close vicinity to the rusty boxes I got. Why not try to re-plant the flowers in the tackle box?! Petunias don’t need a ton of water so I didn’t see the need to drill holes for water to drain. The colors of the petunias would really accentuate the colors of the tackle box too.  What did I have to loose by trying this project out? Could I possibly kill the petunias? These plants are very sensitive and are always on the brink of doing exceptionally well or dying. Therefore, even if they never took root in the planter I didn’t have much to loose. So one evening, while the kids were outside playing, I planted the petunias in the teal tackle box. It only took about 5 minutes.

Sometimes you embark on a project and halfway you start second guessing the idea all together. All kinds of ideas start going through your head like – “What was I thinking? This is looking uglier than I thought! There is no way I can blog about this now. Look at it!”  Of course that happened but once I was finish it looked better than I thought. This was a very quick project that turned out very well. I’m happy to report that the petunias have finally adjusted to the tackle box planter too. For a moment, I feared I had killed them for good. But that’s petunias for you!
