Blood Orange Margarita

This Blood Orange Margarita is delicious and refreshing.

Margarita, margarita, MAR-GA-RITA! It’s February 22 and for National Margarita Day of course, I wanted to share our latest margarita recipe – Blood Orange Margarita. A few weeks back, I started seeing blood oranges at the grocery store. I always like to have them for drink recipes or even charcuterie boards because they are so pretty. Once, we made Blood Orange Moscow Mules and I was hooked on them ever since. We aren’t strangers to margarita recipes either.

Blood oranges are mild in taste and visually beautiful. I love that deep red pop of color when you slice a blood orange open. Ah! I get so excited when that happens. There was no doubt we needed to try a new cocktail recipe with them. My husband is great at making cocktails. I always call him in for reinforcement. My favorite part of cocktails is the styling and garnish. What glass will we use, what garnish do we have, can we use salt or sugar on the rim? And of course, I like to taste test.

There is nothing complicated about a margarita recipe – simple syrup, lime juice, liqueur, and tequila are your mainstay ingredients. What specific brands you use is up to you but what’s more important is the portion. That’s right I said it. The ratio you use for your margarita recipe is more important than the brands you use!  One of my sisters recently shared a liquor ratio for margaritas that I used in this recipe. We tried to somewhat mimic that in this blood orange margarita.

Whether you like “on the rocks” or frozen is up to you. However, margarita salt is non-negotiable. The trick to getting the salt to adhere to your glass – lime juice. Take a cut lime, run it along the rim of your glass, and then glide the rim of the glass through margarita salt. That’s it. If you want to chill your glass beforehand you can do that as well.
